The heat is flitting on the border as the air slips into a deeper shade of warm, the carnival parties have stopped and a soft lull seems to have set in; it’s the perfect time to get those suede shoes out and head to a special soiree. On March 14th 2010, a warm Saturday evening at 8pm, the courtyard stage at the Gonsalves Mansion will be lit up again for ‘Heritage Jazz’ Parisian Treat with the EOL Trio.

This eclectic, high power trio comprises of Denis Girard on the keyboard, his brother Xavier Girard on the drums and Laurant David on bass. It’s been 15 years since the two brothers have played together, five years since they have produced EOL TRIO and have given rise to a fusion of history and modernity with their music.

The EOL trio work primarily through extensive experimentation producing unique and crazy sounds that range from nu-jazz to strings of 70’s rock; their music is authentic and intuitive, their compositions are peppered with a heady blend of desperate sounds, crazy variations and even disco and techno.

In the jazz arena, they are already described as a magic trio with a new and fertile sound. They have graced many a music festival and were celebrated Jazz Talents at the Vienne Jazz Festival (F, 2004) and the Nice Jazz Festival (F, 2008), finalists of the “Sunside Tremplin” and the “Tremplin jazz Ile de France” (2006); they attend the most prestigious French scenes.

In the first half of March, Heritage Jazz will present to us the flavours of France with two wonderful jazz acts. On 7th March, talented and emotionally vibrant French chanteuse Barbara Carlotti will sizzle on stage at the Gonsalves Mansion, Campal after 8pm. She will be in town with her band and is excited about playing at ‘India’s home of jazz’.

Influenced by one of the greats of French literature, Baudelaire, Carlotti’s inspiration comes from spleen and l’ideal, two attractive points of human feelings around which her music revolves. « Les lys brisés », her first album released in 2006 contains shades of dark high class songs and hugely influenced by spleen. Her album « L’idéal » to be released in France on March 26th however is more sunny, funny and charming, without betraying her natural elegance. Her sophisticated lyrics and her stunning voice are fitting to these autumn songs and beautiful melodies.

Barbara Carlotti writes and composes most of the records, and does it with a masterly demonstration of her inspiration, and her strong character is leading her to deal with so many styles and genres. A bit too early to be categorized as a neo-sixties goddess, Barbara Carlotti is showing us that her style can’t be dated. She is classic and daring, thrilling and perfidious, funny and sophisticated, indifferent and passionate, extremely anglophile and desperately french.

Splash into some colour, dodge those water balloons, enjoy some music and dance, watch the floats go by to get fun pictures of some Festival frolic.

Tasteful and interesting fusion of two excellent jazz artists, Francois Bourassa excellent jazz pianist and lovely chanteuse Jeanne Rochette with two of India’s finest Jazz performers, Gino Banks accomplished drummer and one of India’s best bassists, the young and talented Sheldon D’Silva.

It was indeed a marvelous evening of magic, mystery and fun with a high energy Bulgarian ensemble. Djaima and ensemble gave a sizzling performance  with some interesting beats, a mélange of sounds and splash the Jazz yard with colour.

She was simply ravishing in a gorgeous pink dress with heels to match as she took stage at the Gonsalves Mansion on the eve of Republic Day; when Djaima and her band started, the home of jazz was crackling as if on hot coals. 8pm on a Monday meant people drove down after a hard day at work to chill out to some exciting music; some took a break from the grapes and enjoyed beer instead as they bobbed their heads to some superb Bulgarian-Parisian Gypsy jazz.

The jazz yard was bedecked in a clash of bright pinks, purples, gold, turquoise and greens, hanging beneath the lamps and gracing the small chickoo tree near the entrance. It was a marvelous evening of magic, mystery and fun with the high energy ensemble led by Djaima (Emanuelle Petrova ep Bruneau), a violinist, singer and actress of the finest caliber. Karsten Hochapfel, Germany’s most popular jazz Cello player was sensational, Nicolas Cambon created waves with his trumpeting prowess, Aleksi Aubry-Carlson, talented and versatile was a strumming wonder while Julien Anguier de Moussac kept perfect rhythm on the drums. Each artist brought their own charm, eccentricities and flavour to the act, creating an exciting, musical celebration.

With shows like this one, the year of Music 2010 is definitely rocking at Heritage Jazz creating huge success and buzz around the state and even the country. Always known for their exceptional quality events with a wide range of musicians, styles, genres and always giving the public something novel and exciting to come to, Heritage jazz hosted some mystery, magic and of course, music as Goans flocked to Campal, for a colourful, power packed gypsy party!

Djaima interestingly is a Sanskrit word which means, victory to you mother and the lady behind this stage name comes from Toutrakan, a small town by the Danube. She is a performer from the heart and creates magic when on stage, her music is strongly influenced by theatrics, dance and influences of World Music; she has performed across the globe at various events and enthralled audiences with a mystic and musical spells. In February 2009, she put her heart and soul into “Voice for Peace” where she participated with various global musicians, to create hymns and songs for peace in each country. They go beyond music and entertainment, keeping such interests at heart, creating another common ground with Heritage Jazz, which is also known for all its peace and charity associations.

Djaima and band, sizzled on stage with folk rhythms, gypsy sounds, Balkan tunes, world music and a whole range of colourful styles that got everyone grooving to their wonderful fusion fete.

Indo - Canadian Jazz Melange

Heritage Jazz is all set for a wonderful Jazz event on the 3rd of February 2010 at the Gonsalves Mansion, Campal, 8:00pm. Presenting a tasteful and interesting fusion of two excellent jazz artists, Francois Bourassa excellent jazz pianist and lovely chanteuse Jeanne Rochette with two of India’s finest Jazz performers, Gino Banks accomplished drummer and one of India’s best bassists, the young and talented Sheldon D’Silva.

Québécois Jazz Meets Indian Rhythm On the 3rd February 2010 at the Gonsalves Mansion, The Home of Jaz in Campal

As a youth François Bourassa studied piano and composition (and also explored blues guitar) and is a highly educated and seriously established musician. Composer and pianist François Bourassa leads one of Canada’s most active recording and touring jazz ensembles, which recently celebrated its 25th birthday. Since 1985, when François Bourassa’s ensemble won the Montreal International Jazz Festival’s new talent competition, his band has recorded regularly and has toured festivals, clubs and cultural centres across CANADA as well as in FRANCE. They have been the only jazz artists invited by Canada’s Governor General to appear in a star-studded 50th Anniversary gala aired live on the CBC/Radio-Canada television network. They have also performed in the UNITED KINGDOM, BELGIUM, KOREA, MEXICO, RUSSIA, SPAIN, the UNITED STATES, the Nanjing Festival in CHINA, the Yokohama Jazz Festival in JAPAN and the NETHERLANDS’ North Sea Jazz Festival.

Jeanne Rochette’s universe is unclassifiable; she experiments in style! Her songs and arrangements are richly informed by French chanson, world music, jazz, electro, retro and also some theatre and poetry. She is a true ‘bete de scene’, able to mesmerise her audiences with her energy, vocal prowess, intelligence, wit and charm, all rolled into one. She has performed at various Festivals in her hometown as well as in cities across the globe and in 2008 won the Jusry Prize at the Decouvertes de la Chanson in Magog, QC.

Gino Banks, son of Louis Banks, India’s legendary jazz pianist and composer, has been fooling around with the drums since he was 8 years old and took it up seriously at the age of 15. He toured Australia and China with his fathers’ indo-jazz fusion band SANGAM playing percussion. Gino is already making a mark as a drummer to watch out for. He hopes to make a big impact on the music world by spreading the knowledge and message of creative and honest music to any and everybody.

Sheldon D’Silva started playing Bass at the age of 12 and couldn’t stop ever since!!He has played with great Indian musicians such as Louis Banks, Zakir Hussain Fazal Quereshi, Sridhar Parthsarthy and Braz Gonsalves to name a few. Sheldon has performed at many concerts all over the country with his band NEXUS (which also includes Gino Banks).

Combine the prowess of these two Quebecois musical greats with two of India’s best and the result can only be experienced to be believed; such wonderful fusion of different genres and styles is sure to produce an exciting, exotic musical cocktail, to delight and satisfy.

The year of Music 2010, has started on the right note for Heritage Jazz with the latest South African Safari, causing huge success and buzz around the state and even the country. Always known for their exceptional quality events with a wide range of musicians, styles, genres and always giving the public something novel and exciting to come to, Heritage jazz is shaking the tambourines around town, making way for Djaima and band, a high powered ensemble who sizzle on stage with folk rhythms, gypsy sounds, Balkan tunes, world music and a whole range of colourful styles that is sure to get your heart pumping to a different groove.

The Marcus Wyatt quintet performance was amazing.  The audience gathered at the Gonsalves Mansion could have not asked for anything better.

The quintet comprising of  Siya Makuzeni on amazing vocals, Melissa Van der Spuy an excellent keyboardist, Prince Bulo’s great bass skills & Justin Badenhorst on the drums and Gavan Eckhart who does their sound design put up an outstanding performance
